Color Theory: Midnight + Citrus

I am a recent lover of color. During my first year at design school, my favorite professor said to me, "Many people learn values first, which is good but they are limited to understanding only in terms of black & white. Wait until you start to see color, your world will come alive!" She was so passionate about color. The way certain relationships could make a hue vibrate or recede. The emotions a specific color palette would reveal. She taught me color theory & now I realize there was a method to her madness. My world really has come alive!

It is, for this reason, a little corner of Brave Girl will host the beautiful world of color as I see it (color is so subjective, Joel swears he saw a purple cop car once).

Lately, this navy and citrus palette is making me swoon. The energy of bold & juicy citrus colors (orange, grapefruit, lemon) bounces off of the deep & calming midnight sky. This color palette makes me feel energized & calm at the same time, like cruising on the boat in the summertime without a destination. I've fallen for these colors so much, they became the sole inspiration for our room.

I've always had feminine-looking bedrooms growing up so when it came to sharing a room with my man, I had to really stretch my design skills...& my selfish habits (closet space, anyone?). So we painted one wall midnight blue, added a rug in complimenting hues & started sprinkling hints of citrus on our gallery wall & bookshelves.

Our bedroom made me realize I'm really into simple spaces with a few thoughtful pieces. This ethos makes color choices more important & meaningful as well. I also found orange often represents change & movement while blue is associated with peace & spirituality. Ahh, a peaceful change.

What color match-ups are you loving right now?!
