Winter Capsule 2018: Yoga pants for working from home
Winter Capsule 2018: Yoga Pants
Promise I'm not sitting in my bed working on my computer all day. But I can't promise I'm not wearing yoga pants while working all day. It's called athleisure.
Do any other work-from-homer's have the daily challenge of getting ready? The Winter 10x10 I did last month helped get me out of this funk but it's easy to fall back into. Especially if you have a service-based career and are on email and in design software all day. Some days I'm 3 coffees deep and have responded to all client inquiries yet failed to brush my hair. How does that happen?!
Tip: Get yoga pants in different colors
This is where yoga pants come in. I believe you can wear them and still be productive and creative. My tip? DON'T GET BLACK. I really like the Aerie Chill. Play. Move. collection for their style and color options. Plus they're not super tight like other brands I've tried. I'm looking to have 1 more pair in a different color (put in a Valentine's Day plug to Joel for these. No shame.) These ones are in Deep Plum.
Tip: Wear soft-soled shoes
The other tip? WEAR SHOES. It seems silly to wear shoes when working from home but it gets me in a productive mode required to accomplish daily tasks. I consistently hear from creatives looking to go freelance that they don't think they're disciplined enough to stay focused and hit client deadlines while at home. I'm not saying wearing shoes will fix this – there are personalities that simply work better in solo settings vs. groups – I'm just saying when you're in the blahs you have to do silly things to convince your mind YOU WILL GET SHIT DONE.
Sometimes shoes are the answer. I like moccasins because they're comfortable with soles to feel more like shoes instead of slippers.
I like pairing a graphic tee with them. This long-sleeved Tribe tee has been in my capsule for a few years. I'm VERY picky about typefaces and kerning so it takes me a while to choose. Once I do though, I keep 'em around for a while.
When your closet compliments your lifestyle, you can focus on the fun projects at hand.
Casual style for working from home
I definitely don't wear this yoga pants/graphic tee/moccasin combo for client meetings, press checks, or networking events. At the top of the week and near the end, I plan design time for projects and tackle odds and ends that inevitably pile up when I'm head down creating the rest of the week (taxes anyone?! bah).
That's what this outfit is perfect for. It's also an easy transition for going to lunchtime yoga or walking Tiger. Add a couple of layers, switch out moccasins for sneakers and I'm out the door in five minutes. My style has a lot to do with practicality.

Self-care in February, join me?
Having a capsule wardrobe has been an ongoing form of self-care for me. As I mentioned here, clothing is emotional, and emotional well-being is important to your success. I'm SO rationalizing getting a new pair of yoga pants, aren't I?
But really when I went full-time freelance last summer I did it on the condition that self-care would be a priority. If I'm not taking care of my well-being, how am I supposed to show up for clients, projects, relationships, and family successfully?
As creatives who love to give we need to remember to give the love to ourselves as well.
So our tanks aren't so empty we turn into design monsters running over every unkerned graphic tee in our path. I'll be sharing a tip each week this month to help infuse self-care into your days if you're needing a little midwinter pick-me-up.
What are some self-care things you do to keep the monsters away? Post a photo or story on Instagram using #iamlovingme and show me. I'd love to add more self-care options to my list as well! xo, Em

Self-Care for Creatives: Why writing relieves stress
Write for 10 minutes to yourself this week
There is nothing quite like waking up to coffee, lighting a candle, and writing without an agenda for 10-20 minutes to start your day. I used to roll my eyes at the thought of a slow morning. Concerned that starting slow would mean missing out. But writing for even 10 minutes before hopping on email or rushing to a meeting isn't as counterintuitive as it seems. It sets the pace for my day and allows me to focus on one thing at a time, which is truly all we can do successfully anyways.
I started doing this a couple of years ago from a prompt in The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. The idea is to write stream of consciousness in a journal to get it all out. I do it a few times a week in a journal for my eyes only. Sometimes in the morning, but not always. Sometimes I throw the pages away to clear my head or get the negative emotions out which tend to run rampant in my mind if I don't actively remove them.
A self-care prompt for this week:
Gift yourself a journal and write a few times this week for 10-20 minutes. Maybe a set time just to hold yourself accountable to a new habit. I like to include a nice little note to myself at the end; we are to others as we are first to ourselves.
Journals if you need a starting point: Rifle Co. Botanicals Notebooks / Moleskine Soft Cover Journal/ Classic Marble Composition Notebook
Let me know if you're doing it with me by tagging a photo or story of your journal with #iamlovingme on Instagram. I'd love to cheer you on. Have a great week! xo, Em

Winter 10×10: Fave looks + insights
Winter 10X10 Challenge Recap
It is complete friends, I've finished my first 10x10 challenge by Style Bee x Unfancy! Here's a recap of my favorite and least favorite outfits and what I learned wearing 10 items for 10 days in a row. I didn't count shoes, outerwear, or accessories as part of my 10 items. It allowed the outfits to look different enough so I wasn't ever bored. I'll probably challenge myself this Spring to limit shoe and accessory count though.
My favorite outfit: Day 6
Polka Dot Thursday is something I would've never styled if it wasn't for this challenge pushing me out of my comfort zone (AKA black skinnies with everything). I loved the silhouette created between the skirt and collared shirt and how it transitioned from day to night (leather jacket and hair down). It revived this skirt from 2 years ago I've barely worn and inspired looks for the end of winter and spring that I'm excited to wear. I tried wearing it again for day 10 but the weather got in the way!
Runner up: Day 4 and 7
Most worn item: 10" High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell)
My least favorite outfit: Day 2
Sunday Brunch fit the vibe for a rainy Sunday but when I look back at all 10 looks, I'm not feeling it. The first thing I think of is how uncomfortable these tights were. Granted I had them on backward and didn't know until after we got back from brunch. This outfit confirmed I'm not a casual dress person. Especially not in the winter. I'm mostly pure function and don't want my legs cold. I'm keeping this dress because it's warm and I love the color but don't plan on wearing it out much again.
Runner up: Day 9
MVP Item: Cable-knit sweater
Not only did I start and finish the challenge with this cable-knit sweater but when it got hard (days 7-9) this was the item I kept trying to turn to. It's cozy and slouchy yet has a great shape and texture. I've been on a search for the perfect sweater for 2 years and found it at Goodwill this season. I'm glad I held out for it.
Runner up: Black mock neck sweater
Reader favorite: Perforated Leather Booties (similar)
LVP Item: Gray cardigan
We knew this was going to happen, right? I mentioned when choosing my 10 items I didn't think it'd get much wear. It didn't until day 9 and only because I hadn't worn it yet. I love the length and large pockets, it's the color I don't like. I gave it to a friend who's going to rock it with her great style so it's still a win-win.
Runner up: White-collar button-up (for comfort and worn out)
Top Takeaway: Clothing is emotional
Of all the lessons I wanted to share with you about these last 10 days, a more important theme came to the forefront. Clothing is emotional.
It's amazing what happens when intention drives the clothing we wear. Until starting my capsule I never did this. It was a big guessing game speckled with fitting room freakouts like why is this not working how it's supposed to?!
I'm convinced of the value an intentional wardrobe can bring to your life, especially after this challenge. We deserve to feel good and confident as we go about our days. And if our clothing helps with that, then all the better.
I'm planning on doing a Spring 10x10 challenge next. I hope you'll join me if the timing feels right for you. In the meantime check out the #winter10x10 posts on Instagram. The community around this challenge was so uplifting and inspirational. Thank you for following along, more capsule chats to come!

Life lately in tune with the monthly full moon cycle.
January Wolf Moon – January Blue Moon
Hello! The January Blue Moon is the 7th post in Full Moon Monthly, a blog series that recaps life lately and what's on the horizon. This is the 2nd full moon in January. It's a rare occurrence to have 2 full moons in 1 month which is why it's called a Blue Moon. Ever heard the phrase, "That only happens once in a blue moon?" This is where it comes from (source). Since the Wolf Moon at the beginning of the month, there's been a good mix of rest and planning for some fun projects and events ahead.

Freelance Design Chat at GVSU student group
I'm doing another chat this month with GVSU students. I did a similar talk last November and I'm looking forward to meeting up again to chat about my experience as a freelance designer and talk about the rates and reality of freelancing. Sometimes I think freelancing gets romanticized. I like to be upfront about it and often walk away with great insights and questions.

Co-Works at Coffee Shops
I got out for a couple of events and co-working with currently Kherington and Sincerely Ashley last month. When I worked in an office I remember thinking working from home was a luxury. Now I think there needs to be a balance of solitude and community because you'll drive yourself nuts just sitting alone at the computer all day! We're all hustling for the life we want to live, so why not hustle together?

10x10 Outfit Challenge
I did a 10x10 outfit challenge and I learned SO MUCH from participating in it. 10 clothing items for 10 days in a row. It was a great experiment to do in lieu of sharing more of my capsule wardrobe here. It lifted my spirits and kept me looking forward to something each day which is difficult for me during these dark winter months. I'll be doing an overall recap of it this weekend.

Business Goals
You should see my desk and notebooks right now. The first couple of weeks I tried taking it easy but then found myself signing up for ALL THE THINGS. A weekly lettering challenge, outfit challenge, Jenna Kutcher's email list workshop, and joining some groups with other bloggers and designers. When I'm deep in a project I become a hermit to complete the work and get it the way I want it. So I took advantage of the slower pace to better clarify WHY I started Brave Girl and what I'm trying to do here (more on that soon). The groups I joined and the projects feel REALLY GOOD. The workload has since picked up and it's been an amazing feeling to work with more purpose and continue to practice my craft.

Now is the time for rose-colored glasses
Homwork #2 Now is the time for rose-colored glasses
This week's Homwork prompt was to redo a piece you created in the past to see how far you've come in your skill. I recreated my rose-colored glasses girl from 2014.
Improvements made:
1. I like the materials I used more this time around – watercolor paper (thanks Mom!) and paint, my favorite ink pen, and colored pencil for the letters.
2. I didn't push so heavy on my pen this time or maybe I got the ink to paper mix right. Last time I remember thinking the ink bled too much but wasn't sure what to do about it.
3. Placement feels more thoughtful now. I wanted the glasses to demand attention and have smaller circles balance out the image with her earring, cheek rouge, and little side-knot.
I remember drawing her after yoga one night in 2014. I was completely frustrated with my career and feeling very impatient so I drew the woman I hoped to be. Some elements feel the same between them but 2018 Rose Colored Glasses girl looks grown to me;
Confident but not cocky.
Awake without demanding attention.
Playful yet passionate.
May you put on your own rose-colored glasses this week and see the glow in the ordinary. Or be the glow yourself and let it inspire those around you.
How are you brightening your days lately? What's one of your favorite projects you've created so far? xo, Em

Winter 10×10: Last 4 days
I really started to get into my groove the last 4 days. After wearing most everything once the first half it was fun to mix up the pieces and try them in different ways. Here are my outfits for Day 7 – 10 (see the first 3 days, halfway point, and what the Winter 10x10 challenge is).
Game Time Friday | I wore this buffalo check shirt (similar) with leather jacket (similar) and jeans, adding the hat after listening to The Avett Brothers as I got ready. I thought I'd be too dressed up for my dad's game (he coaches varsity basketball) but the spirit section was dressed country as a joke to the opposing team. Ironically I fit in with students more than I ever have thanks to this look, haha. We went to a brewery to celebrate his win afterward. A Friday very well spent. :)
Buffalo check button-up (gifted) | High-rise slim boy jeans (Madewell) | Booties (similar) | Hat (similar) | Leather jacket (similar)
Sandra Dee Saturday | My Mom got me this polka dot bandana before I wore my Day 6 Polka Dot Thursday outfit and gifted it to me this weekend. It's eerie how connected she and I can be! So I HAD to do a bandana again as it complimented my sneakers perfectly. I felt like a worse singing and more casual version of Olivia Newton John in Grease all day. I loved the all-black look with a bit of color and pattern. Casual for a Saturday hopping around town with my Mom looking at vintage home decor and getting a few new vinyls.
Black mock neck sweater (thrifted) | 10″ High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell) | Sneakers (Veja) | Bandana (gifted) | Leather jacket (similar)
Sunday Road Trip | It was a drinking coffee until 2pm kind of Sunday so this look got half its wear. This was the FIRST time the entire challenge I wore this gray cardigan which is a sign to me that it needs to go in the Goodwill pile (unless anyone wants it?!). The color is why I avoided the entire challenge because I LOVE the fit. Probably why I've kept it so long without wearing it much. Any good ideas on where to find similar without a cool gray tone? Either way, this look was comfortable yet structured enough to feel put together as we made the trek back home after a great weekend with my parents.
White-collar button-up (thrifted) | Gray sleeveless cardigan with pockets (similar) | High-rise slim boy jeans (Madewell) | Wedges (Toms – similar)
Press Check Monday | My final outfit! It really doesn't surprise me that I went back to my tried and true for the last day – cozy sweater and comfy skinnies. I planned to wear this sweater with the suede skirt until I woke to SNOW and said F that. The outfit was spot on for a morning press check and co-work time with my friends Kherington and Ashley that I'm about to head out to soon! Never did I think I'd pair a beret with my duck boots but alas that is what this challenge about, yes? To surprise yourself and try things you normally wouldn't.
Ivory sweater (thrifted) | 10″ High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell) | Boots (Sorel - similar) | Beret (similar) | Earrings (Lee & Birch)
Well, my friends, this is the end of the challenge. I'm a bit sad, it's consumed me in the best of ways. I'll be back with a recap of my findings and all 10 looks a bit later this week. Thank you for cheering me on and providing feedback these last 10 days. It's reenergizing to know I'm not alone and to be inspired by my wardrobe and others' outfits! Winter 10×10: Halfway point
Woowee! I wasn't expecting the response from you guys with this challenge and I'm so grateful for your feedback, questions, and cheering me on. We're over halfway there! Here are my outfits for Day 4–6.
See Days 1-3 and what the Winter 10x10 challenge is.
Tuesday Lunch | I really liked the versatility of this look for lunch with a friend to chat about freelance and client meetings in the afternoon. At home, I wore the collared shirt without a cardigan. I liked wearing my bandana as a headband but it kept falling off. Good for events but not the entire day – I don't like fussy.
Style question: How do you style a bandana or wear headbands?
Neutral patterned sleeveless cardigan (similar) | White-collar button-up (thrifted) | 10″ High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell) | Booties (similar) | Bandana (Madewell)
WFH Wednesday | Bah. Tried a bandana with the knot underneath because I REALLY wanted to push my hair back without having to do a ponytail. It held better this way. Sweater and skinnies were THE BEST combo for working from home. I had a last second client visit and stopped into a new space to pitch a photoshoot so my blush pink sneaks came in handy too. Ankles were a bit cold but worth it to feel like I had my shit together when walking Tiger around the neighborhood at sunset.
Style question: How do you take care of sweaters? I know the dryer is BAD for them but I'm lazy. What do you do to hold the shape without expensive dry-cleaning?
Ivory sweater (thrifted)10″ High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell) | Sneakers (Veja) | Bandana (Madewell) | Computer glasses (Kimball in Marzipan Tortoise by Warby Parker)
Polka Dot Thursday | I LOVE this look! It falls into the fussy category (more than 3 layers) but the long shirt with skirt created a lower waistline that made me feel Cable Girls kind of fancy. The polka dots and collar necklace added to this vibe. It's good to get dressed up for no reason sometimes! Fortunately, I had 2 good reasons; the CreativeMornings GR event I went to and now date night with Joel. We're going to a local brewery for dinner and cheers to a good week! I think I'll add my leather jacket (similar) for the occasion.
Style question: What's a sustainable/conscious/slow fashion lingerie brand you love? I've never put much thought into my undergarments but getting a bit fancy today made me start considering it more! Any tips or suggestions?!
Black mock neck sweater (thrifted) | White-collar button-up (thrifted) | Tan suede knee-length skirt (JBandMe) | Tights (similar) | Black booties (Jessica Simpson - similar) | Necklace (similar)
It's interesting the topics my outfits have brought up with friends and family because of this challenge. I'm happy it's prompted discussion about capsule wardrobes, our individual styles and observing habits that maybe we've never thought of before. I feel like I've just grazed the surface and am learning SO MUCH about the fashion industry and how we can help as consumers. It truly is deeper than the dress, you know? One more recap to go, then the final look at all 10 together over the next week! My final day should be next Monday. I'm going to attempt Days 7–9 this weekend when visiting my parents. Thanks for joining me on this journey with my wardrobe!
Thoughts? Personal experience with any of these topics? Stories that might guide me? Comment below!
Winter 10×10: The first 3 days
The challenge is underway, chicas! Here's a mini-recap of each outfit and what I've discovered so far. More details of what the Winter 10x10 is here.
Casual Friday | This look feels the most like me. I like being comfy with a bit of structure. The green wedges made it feel put together and I liked the height they added. Also liked the colorful bracelets so it wasn't 100% neutral. I wore this on a work from home day, ran an errand for a client, and to a movie at night with friends.
Style tip: Cuff your pant legs for a more laidback look to your denim.
Ivory sweater (thrifted) | High-rise slim boy jeans (Madewell) | Wedges (Toms - similar) | Bracelets (Lee & Birch)
Sunday Brunch | Found I like mixing patterns that don't match. It was a rainy day but not too cold so I wore the dress with sweater tights, leather jacket, and crocheted scarf to brunch at The Sovengard (so good by the way!). I haven't worn this dress much because I couldn't find a way to style it. I found it's probably because I've never worn it with tights. Problem solved, I love this dress with tights!
Style tip: When mixing patterns, choose another piece in the same color family to make a more cohesive look (ex: black sweater tights with black leather jacket).
Navy plaid shirtdress (similar)| Sweater tights (similar) | Leather jacket (similar) | Scarf (handmade) | Booties (similar)
Rainy Monday | Perfect for the rainy cold weather. I went to yoga at lunch so wore this the second half of the day. I'll be wearing it again this season because of its simplicity. I liked the pop of buffalo check pattern to break up the black and had no choice but to go with bright yellow wellies, they're my only pair of rainboots. I like how they brighten up gray days. I'm glad I kept layers in mind when picking my 10 pieces because this look was very warm. I only added a rain jacket when Joel and I grabbed a drink at Brewery Vivant to celebrate a pretty good Monday.
Style tip: Cuff the sleeves of the bottom layer to reveal more pattern.
Black mock neck sweater (thrifted) | Buffalo check button-up (gifted) | 10″ High-rise black skinny jeans (Madewell) | Wellies (Hunter)
So far the challenge is going well. I've mixed a few items I never have before and it's making the winter blahs more fun. I'll be back in a few days with my outfits on days 4 – 6. In the meantime check out the #winter10x10 hashtag on Instagram. I love seeing how everyone is styling their items and their take on the challenge.
What do you wear to make your winter wardrobe a bit more interesting? How do you layer?
Remember why you started
Homwork #1 Remembering why you started
Amidst the trillion other things I thought would be a good idea to sign-up for all at once as the clock struck 2018, was a weekly lettering challenge by Lauren Hom. She's a badass letterist and illustrator whose work I've admired since her Daily Dishonesty days.
This week's prompt was to write your name surrounded by your favorite things. And it really came at perfect timing because when you're working for yourself, it's very easy to forget the reason you started in the first place. You want it to work SO BAD that sometimes the hustle takes over the heart. Or you're drowning in tracking hours, invoices, emails so you can keep working on the things you feel is most important to give back to this world.
So, this was a good one to work on today. Because I kind of forgot that I LOVE listening to my blues records and why not play those more? Oh and a slow Saturday in Joel's flannel with coffee and a good book. All the more reason to finish up my work today and enjoy a relaxing weekend home.
You can also find each week's lettering on my Instagram. If you're interested, join the creative challenge anytime and you'll receive a weekly email from Lauren with the next week's prompt. Sign-up here.
Why did you start? What's on your mind to start that you haven't yet? xo, Em
Winter 10x10 challenge: My 10 capsule items
You may have seen from my Instagram highlights I'm trying out my first 10x10 challenge starting this Friday!
Winter 10x10 Challenge
The basic idea of the Winter10x10 challenge is to pick 10 items of clothing then mix and match them for 10 business days in a row. The guidelines from Lee of Style Bee (the creator of the challenge) lay out more details here. For example, jewelry, accessories, or shoes don't have to count as part of the 10 pieces (and in my case outerwear and boots because snow is definitely in the forecast). You can make it as challenging or relaxed as you want.
Pick any 10 items from your current closet
Style those items into 10 different looks
Use 10 days to do it.
Have fun & don’t take it too seriously!
It's basically a fun way to discover more about your style. Also good ff you're considering a capsule wardrobe but aren't sure if you're ready for it or not. Like practice for a capsule wardrobe. I spent about 30 minutes picking out my pieces. Keeping in mind the weather forecast, meetings, and events I have planned for the next 10 days. I also tried a couple of outfits to confirm certain pieces could last multiple outfits in 10 days.
My 10 selections
I don't have photos of the exact pieces yet (some are thrifted or I've had for years!) so I've curated items from brands I love below and then listed out what I plan to wear. I decided not to include shoes or outerwear, in addition to jewelry and accessories, for my first challenge. With snow in the forecast, I just couldn't justify using 2 slots for boots when I'd rather use them for layers, which is why I have more tops selected.
6 Tops
White collar button up (thrifted)
Ivory sweater (thrifted)
Black mock neck sweater (thrifted)
Buffalo check button-up (gifted)
Neutral patterned sleeveless cardigan (Lucky brand from Marshall's)
Gray sleeveless cardigan with pockets (Marshall's)
1 Dress
Navy plaid shirtdress (Francesca's) OR navy patterned sweater dress (JCPenny)
3 Bottoms
I wonder about the gray cardigan because lately, I've been avoiding it (too gray, too blah) so I'm curious to see if this challenge revives that or if it's time to move on.
I added the suede skirt to challenge myself because I like it yet it doesn't get much wear. Also leaning towards a plaid shirtdress instead of a sweater dress but I have a few meetings where the plaid shirtdress might feel too casual.
Excited to start on Friday! Tag me in your #winter10x10 posts if you're doing it too so I can see your daily outfits! I'll be sharing mine in my Instagram stories so add me here if you want to follow along.
Have you ever done a 10x10 challenge or something similar with your wardrobe?

Winter Capsule 2018: The wool coat I found for $10
Winter Capsule 2018: Wool coat
Hello! I've been in MAJOR reflection mode (maybe a little too much) since the New Year. I really like this time of year to reflect on the last year and my hopes for the upcoming one. I've realized it takes me about a month to get back into the swing of things and I'm trying to be ok with that. One thing I've been focusing on is my winter capsule 2018 wardrobe.
New: Capsule Wardrobe posts
I'm bringing a new topic to this space and eliminating some that no longer speak to me. Thanks to those of you who completed my reader survey to help me with this! It's so good to get out of your own head.
Capsule Wardrobe for the Seasons
So a topic I'll be digging deeper into is my Capsule Wardrobe. I've had one for 4 years now! There are different definitions for capsule wardrobes (my faves here and here) but for me, a capsule wardrobe is a set of guidelines to organize your closet and discover your own personal style (guidelines being the keyword).
I was talking to some friends about this as I was hesitant about sharing, but they made a good point. While a capsule might not be for everybody it's an interesting perspective about personal style worth sharing.
A capsule wardrobe is a set of guidelines to organize your closet and discover your own personal style.
As a designer, I believe it's crucial to be confident about yourself and your work. For me, it's hard to feel confident in meetings or at network events when I'm not comfortable with what I'm wearing. If I can't believe in me, how will potential clients who don't know me that well yet believe in me? So I'm hoping this can help you too if you're looking to refresh your wardrobe or update it a bit to feel more like you.
One of the best things I found about starting a capsule is understanding what my style is and growing into it. College was a mish-mash of tight and short items from F21 sales racks and prior to that, it was a lot of sportswear. Not the cute athleisure kind either. More like swimming in jerseys and sweatpants as an athlete.
After 4 years of about 55 items per season (including accessories + shoes!), I'm ready to shift the guidelines a bit to purchase conscious clothing options when I can. I need to be clear that I DO still buy clothing from places like Target, Marshalls, Anthro, Nordstrom, and other fast fashion brands so don't be thinking I'm some purist. But I'm making an effort to limit it in the name of slow fashion, essentialism, and having a smaller carbon footprint.
Winter Capsule 2018: Wool coat
Another way to limit fast fashion purchases is by thrifting. I used to go thrift shopping with my Mom ALL THE TIME. We still swap and trade clothing when we visit each other. In fact, she has her eye on this wool cape I was twirling around in this winter before the snow started flying. I'm not ready to hand it over yet though.
I found it 3 years ago at an estate sale across the street from the greenhouse I worked at. It was squeezed in between big shoulder pads and old prom dresses in unflattering shapes. When I saw the corner of this tan wool fabric I knew I found a diamond in the rough. I snagged it for under $10!
It has a couple of buttons near the top so I wear it both buttoned or unbuttoned depending on the weather. There's so much fabric to it that it's super warm. The subtle texture and fringe at the bottom are what I love most about it.
I often style it with an ivory or cream sweater and jeans with wedges for a more casual look but I loved adding a bold neutral pattern like these high waist trousers to change it up a bit.
Winter 10x10 Challenge
I've added links to similar items below if you want to try out this look too! But what I think would be even better is if you'd join me in a Winter 10x10 Challenge starting this Friday, January 19.
It's the first time I've ever done one and I'm excited about the challenge! 10 pieces of clothing over 10 days...in the dead cold of a Michigan winter. What can I say? I'm in hibernation mode and want to do something fun to reenergize my winter wardrobe. More details from the challenge host Lee of Style Bee right here. You definitely don't need a capsule wardrobe to do this. It actually might be good practice to decide if a capsule wardrobe is for you by doing it for a shorter time period like this.
Comment below if you want to join or have any questions about capsules. And be sure to tag me in the comments of your #winter10x10 photos so I know you're along for the ride. xo friends, Em
Local Spotlight: Boxed by Bare
As I snuggle up with my handmade mug watching the snow falling outside I'm excited to share a new local business I love with you, Boxed By Bare. Jamie and Riley are the sister duo behind thoughtfully curated gift boxes of handmade goods, like the Baby It's Cold Outside Box. They're based near the lakeshore in Zeeland, Michigan.
Local Spotlight: Boxed by Bare
One of my favorite things to do when meeting founders of locally-owned businesses is to learn why they started and their inspirations and dreams as they build their businesses. Read on for my conversation with Jamie and Riley about why they started Boxed by Bare and how they're supporting local artisans and crafters:
What’s the story behind your name?
Bare: plain, simple, essential, fundamental. We wanted to create gift boxes that use simple products that are functional and useful but also fun giving. We look for products that are very natural looking in both color and material.
Why did you start Boxed by Bare? What inspired you?
We have very different personalities but both had the desire to start our own business. When we first talked about starting one we knew that we had to take the adventure together. We both love giving and finding that “perfect gift” but we bring two sides to the business. Jamie is the creative one, the one that packages the gifts, making sure the products sourced work well together and create an “experience” for the person opening the gift. Riley has a very minimalist view. She doesn’t like clutter or extra “stuff” laying around the house. She’s great at sourcing products that will be useful for the person receiving the gift. We tossed around a few angles for the company but we always came back to the same main goal: support handmade, small businesses, and local when possible.
What's one of your biggest challenges as a business owner and how do you overcome it?
Time. We struggle to balance our day-to-day jobs, family, and life. We make it work by finding pockets of free time in the day and cold calling each other.
What’s your favorite Bare box for the season?
That’s hard. I really like the consumable boxes (All You Knead Is Love, When I Dip, You Dip, We Dip, and Soup For The Soul). The hot cocoa box (Baby It's Cold Outside) is Riley’s favorite – it is such a comforting box and is fun to give...who doesn’t love mallows?!
What types of goods do you source?
Almost all of our products are handmade by small businesses. We really appreciate the love that artists put into their products and we want to support that and share their talents with others. We look for mostly simple, natural-looking products that are timeless and functional. You’ll see a lot of wood, ceramics, linen, and neutral colors. We also love the idea of consumable gifts. How many times have you received a gift that just sits in a drawer or is tucked away in a closet for years? We want to avoid gifting products that are just “cute”. When we include something in the box we really believe that it will be useful.
Who is one person you admire?
Our Dad. He works harder than anyone we know. He taught us to wake up early and start our day. Even though we live in different states, we are usually the first people that we talk to in the morning.
*Oh, and a little inside scoop on the hot cocoa box...the Good Stuff Cacao raw and organic dark chocolate is the best chocolate I've ever tasted and the North Mallow marshmallows are such a fun garnish for hot cocoa (I also add a dash of nutmeg). They're better-for-you sweet treats without all the bad-for-you stuff (ie: artificial flavoring and chemical preservatives). Such a great box for a midwinter pick-me-up for yourself or to gift to others.
Find Jamie & Riley – and their gorgeous hand-dyed ribbon! – on Instagram and shop their gift boxes (here).
2017 Year in Review
2017 Year in Review: A recap of celebrations and goals met in my personal and professional life.
Last year was about celebration. This year was about growth. A recap of personal, professional, and travel highlights of the year. Recaps remind me of the magical, often ordinary, moments that I overlook too easily throughout the year. Although it looks clean and organized here, it doesn't feel that way as you're going along living your life so I enjoy taking the time to reflect and celebrate.
Also, see my 2017 Intentions.
Personal
Moved to Grand Rapids
I've talked about this a lot last year (here and here) and plan to more this year. We surprised ourselves by moving to the city because I don't think either of us believed we'd actually go through with it. Things were good where we were and it was tempting to settle into that but no, we had to go and mix it up a bit.

Celebrated our 1-year wedding anniversary
I'm still not ready for our wedding to be over! It was such an amazing weekend I want to relive over and over again. In a way we relived parts of it for our first anniversary; sunbathing at the beach where Joel proposed, dancing to our playlist in the living room while looking at wedding pictures, and grabbing free beers at a local brewery (thanks Kate & Mike!).

Belle passed away
My 18-year old kitty, Belle, passed away last Fall. Admittedly, I'm very much still grieving. We've lost a family member and my first best friend (I got her when I was 9 years old!). I remember the day I got her. My Mom decided on a whim I could pick out a little kitten from the litter (and not tell Dad until we got home). Belle was sleeping on top of the food bowl – she didn't want the food but she didn't want her siblings to have it either – and I knew she was the one for me. I miss her sass, attitude, and tough love cuddles every day, to say the very least.
Attended 4 weddings
I've been extremely sensitive and sappy during weddings since ours. It's truly life-altering and such a celebration of genuine Love, especially at the weddings we went to last year. We celebrated Love of old friends, new friends, my cousin, and one of my best friends where I was her Matron of Honor. I'm looking forward to more Love this year with my other best friend's wedding and some close friends in town!

Made new friends through blogging
One of the reasons I started Brave Girl 4 years ago was for connection with my tribe. I was about to graduate college and was really worked up one day when my favorite instructor told me, "Don't worry, Emily. You haven't found your tribe yet but you will. I promise you will."
She was right. I've met so many thoughtful and full-hearted people like these ladies because of Brave Girl. I'm so grateful for the old and new friendships that have blossomed over this last year. Without friendship and human connection, it's just writing in a black hole to me.

Travel
Austin, Texas
We traveled to Texas last Spring to celebrate my brother-in-law's 30th birthday and have a long weekend away. We flew out the same day we moved into our apartment...a big scheduling error! It was worth it once we got there though. Joel's brother took us to local hot spots and we hiked a trail on the outskirts of the city. We also saw the Texas State Capitol on a day people were protesting Trump which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Recommendations: Bat Bridge / West Sixth Street / Texas State Capitol / Rainey Street
Red River Gorge, Kentucky
Last Fall I went hiking with 3 of my best girlfriends in Kentucky. We stayed in a container cabin, hiked the Natural Bridge Trail, and sipped mulled wine while watching cheesy Christmas movies each night. It was the perfect road trip before the holiday season started. Full of laughter, deep conversations, and only minor worrying about ax murderers on my part.
Recommendations (thanks Dre!): Red River Gorge / Natural Bridge Park / Container cabin Airbnb
Ft. Myers Beach and Cape Coral, Florida
Joel and I spent the last 2 weeks of the year in Florida! We mixed work with play the first week and went mostly unplugged during Christmas break. After a challenging year trying our best to navigate the changes, we were grateful for days of sunshine and water. Most days started with coffee & dolphins and ended watching the sunset and the moon rise in clear skies...truly a dream!

No Man Left Behind Has Heart Design at Starbucks
The design I created in partnership with a Vietnam Veteran as part of Has Heart was made into sweaters, tees, and posters for a pop-up shop at Starbucks Reserve in Seattle. When Has Heart co-founder, Tyler Way, contacted me to tell me the news I was so excited! Their mission to aid United States Veterans is making this world a better place and I love how far they've spread the message so far.

Became a full-time freelance designer
Started freelancing full-time the day of the Solar Eclipse. Felt like a good omen. Some of you might not know but I was full-time freelance a few years ago. I picked up where I left off with added experience, knowledge, and chutzpah thanks to my time as an in-house designer and continuing personal projects throughout.

Design Chat at Grand Valley State University
Each year I try to do at least one speaking event around design. I'd like to do more eventually and maybe even teach a design class one day. Last year I had an informal discussion about design after college with junior and senior design students at Grand Valley. I loved hearing where they're at on their design journey and sharing mine in hopes it could help them.

Opened Brave Girl Print Shop
I finally started selling my handlettered prints last year! I was spending time with my mom one weekend last summer and she was like, "By the time you get home, I want to see your prints on Etsy".
It was the kick in the butt I needed to simply begin. Joel was my first sale, Mom was my second, and a handful of you have purchased them throughout the year, thank you! I'm now in 5 shops around town and excited to share the new Spring/Summer collection that I'm working on right now!
Woowee! Definitely not one for brevity these days. I'm grateful for the challenges and celebrations that 2017 brought and I'm looking forward to what 2018 will bring. Another year with not many plans ahead of time. There's a blessing in not forcing things, yes? Intuition and gut decisions work best at the very last second. I hope you've had a wonderful 2017 and take the time you need if you're the reflecting kind like me. Best wishes for 2018 and stay warm! xo, Em
January Wolf Moon
Life lately in tune with the monthly full moon cycle.
December Cold Moon – January Wolf Moon
Hello! The January Wolf Moon is the 6th post in Full Moon Monthly, a blog series that recaps life lately and what's on the horizon. The Wolf Moon is on January 1st, what a great way to start the new year! Called the Wolf Moon because it's the time of year when wolves would howl in hunger outside the villages (source). It's the first of 2 full moons this month meaning the next one is a Blue Moon! More on what that means at the end of January. The Astro Twins have 6 Ways to Dive Into the Divine Feminine during this full moon that's too good not to share, as well. Since the Cold Moon last month, there's been a lot of holiday festivities, sunshine, and hibernation.
January Wolf Moon
New Year's Day
So far it's been really calm. Joel & Tiger went to play video games with my brother, their annual post-holiday event, and I'm doing not a thing. Robe all day, movies on repeat, shitty food, and some online shopping is the plan for me. Hot cocoa mugs are still out from last night (scroll down for NYE) so I'll probably warm up with that too!
Business Goals
January isn't a power month for me so I'm looking forward to getting back into things slowly. I'm looking forward to brainstorming, sketching, and filling out my 2018 Desire Planner this month. I needed the break that December provided to really wrap my head around where Brave Girl needs to go next and the improvements I want to make with my prints and freelance work. I met my 2017 4th quarter goals which I was really happy about! I'm excited to set more measurable goals for this year.
Hygge Living
You may have heard the term hygge (pronounced hue-gah) flying around lately which is basically a term for enjoying the slower pace of the winter season. It's a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment as cozy and charming. It doesn't require major lifestyle changes or purchasing anything but rather sinking into the warmth and coziness that we're blessed to have during these freezing winter days in the North. It's what I plan to do this month – lots of reading by firelight, TV shows by candlelight, sleep, and eating rooted and green foods with lots of hot lemon water.

Anthropologie Holiday Fashion Show
So, bad news. I didn't end up doing the Holiday Fashion Show! I accidentally double-booked with Joel's work Christmas party which was on the same exact day. Either way, I heard it was a GREAT event and hope I can do it next year. My friend Tieka of Selective Potential shared her experience walking the runway and LOVE the jumper she wore.
Christmas Cookie Decorating
I decorated the cookies, Joel ate them. It was fun spending a Saturday afternoon with family decorating sugar and gingerbread cookies to Christmas music and laughter. I went the neutral route (of course) with my cookies and pretty much hoarded the white icing.
Holiday Postcards via Moo
We FINALLY sent out Holiday cards this year! I've been wanting to do it for years. I used a photo of us in front of the Moon Lodge that Leigh Ann took with our wedding typeface and got postcards printed at Moo. Joel and I wrote notes on the back while watching Hallmark Christmas movies and drinking eggnog. I also organized our address book that I keep updated on Airtable which made my Type A self very happy. My version of a GOOD TIME!

Florida for Christmas
We spent half of December in Ft. Myer's Beach and Cape Coral. While it was much needed R&R from the cold, it was also a test in working remotely for me. I've done a few trips in the last couple of months to work away from my tiny apartment desk and it went really well! I checked in with clients during set times of the day and logged off for biking to the beach and grabbing margaritas at sunset. I eventually logged off entirely at the end of the week because it was a set vacation after all. We watched dolphins each morning from this view of Pelican Bay and eventually met up with Joel's side of our family for Christmas break poolside in a gorgeous vacation home!
NYE 2018
This NYE was the most chill we've had maybe ever. 2017 was challenging for us with moving to the city, new jobs, my cat Belle of 18 years passing away, and wondering what's next for us. We celebrated with a couple of close friends around the kitchen island, snacking and reflecting on the last year and what we're looking forward to in 2018. I forgot to take a picture of all of us so we snapped one quick before falling asleep.

2017 Intentions
Brave Girl 2016 Year in Review: A recap of celebrations and goals met in my personal and professional life.
I had three intentions for 2017 that came to fruition throughout the year. I like focusing on intentions rather than goals because intentions include the why behind what you're doing. The Desire Planner by Danielle LaPorte has been the catalyst to my approach. It's a planner that prompts scheduling each month/week/day based upon desires you have vs. ticking things off a list without rhyme or reason. I'm frustratingly deep that way. So, here are three intentions I had in 2017 and the ways I met them:
1 | Dedication to writing
I rebranded my website last January and got serious about sharing my design work, handlettering, and being consistent on topics that not only light me up but are beneficial to you as a reader of Brave Girl. I also started writing 30 minutes stream of consciousness most mornings to converse with myself before I let others' tasks take priority. Maybe this sounds selfish but it ended up helping immensely to have clarity around what I want, what's bothering me, and allowed me to heal through a lot of difficult things last year.
2 | Emotional Wellness
Emotional wellness became my top priority last year. Writing each morning helped a lot with this. It seems trying to act like everything is ok only creates bigger issues down the road in a person's life...who knew? It's a pretty layered topic but all in all, I started listening within more for what my body, mind, and soul were telling me they needed (found out booze and sugar weren't things they wanted).
Hot yoga and WERQ dance class helped immensely. A simple walk with Tiger to break up the day and shutting down screens by 10pm (most nights) worked wonders as well. I hope to continue this and grow even more in listening to what I need in 2018.
photo c/o Sincerely Ashley
3 | Budget and Purge
Moving to Grand Rapids and going freelance really forced our hand with this. The people closest to me know how finicky I can be with items I allow into our home. Life with a designer, I suppose. Joel should have a separate blog where he talks about that, don't you think?! Either way, the move to a smaller space prompted us to keep only the essentials. The items we loved but weren't practical right now (like these glass vases from our wedding) found other homes meant for them now.
Budgeting was also a big challenge this year as we both got new jobs and since marriage realized how different our perspectives around money could be. We grew a lot! I'm excited for what the next couple of years may bring now that we're working together on this and have communicated our needs and perspectives better.
I'm looking forward to sharing more monthly updates, creative business chats, and capsule wardrobe posts with you in 2018. Thank you for reading Brave Girl last year and for your continued support in the comments, direct messages, and emails. I read every one and each means so much to me! xo, Em

These numbers are neither good nor bad to me but a way to compare with 2017. What this shows me is I was kind of all over the place in 2016 – from outfit posts, trying my hand at interiors and flat lay styling, a hint of hand lettering work, and bits of chatting about creativity. I experimented a lot and challenged myself to try new things. I was also getting married, working 50+ hrs./wk, and moving to a different city. Shit, I WAS all over the place!

I was more visually consistent in 2017 and think that has something to do with growing a bit but the point I really want to make is this: I didn't suddenly change what I believe in to increase my following. Only one thing changed: I started believing in myself and the message I have to share. Gaining confidence also allowed me to be honest with myself. I don't enjoy being a photographer but rather LOVE working with photographers (like Leigh Ann). This gave me more time to write, which I really love, as I'm sure you can tell by my super long posts.
Anyway, I guess I'm telling you this in case you're being hard on yourself about not being where you thought you'd be at this point in your life. Or if you're feeling pressure to grow in a direction that is cool but isn't speaking to you. You have to have years where you're all over the place, years where you're confident in who you are, and years when, who knows how you'll feel or who you'll be but it'll be beautiful for completely new and different reasons.
Let's celebrate how far we've come before we dig into the work ahead, shall we?! What accomplishment are you most proud of this year? Share it with me below.
Creative Business Chats: 3 Tips to Begin Freelance Design
...WITHOUT PULLING YOUR HAIR OUT
is the full working title of this week's Creative Business Chat. I'm not shy to share that the road to being a freelance designer has been rocky for me at times (here). Freelance isn't easy but there are many benefits like the quote I shared in my first Creative Business Chat.
Work and life are so intertwined for me. This kind of lifestyle isn't for everybody. I know a lot of people who separate work and life beautifully and I really admire them for it. Turning work off and turning life on with a definitive boundary line is an art form in itself. I can't find the on and off buttons like that so more flexible boundaries that freelancing allows works best for me. :)
Learning who you are and how you work best is the most important way to know if having a freelance career is right for you.
3 Tips to begin freelance design
So I want to share 3 lessons I've learned the hard way:
1 | Save 6-12 months worth of earnings
I believe in taking calculated risks, not cross-your-fingers-and-hope-it-works type risks (usually). I had 12 months’ worth of savings before giving notice at my first studio job to make sure rent, student loans, and other bills could be paid in worst-case scenarios (ie: unexpected software expenses, killed projects, or sick days). Misconception: you'll start profiting the very day you start freelancing. This simply isn't true. This leads me to next my tip...
Money-saving resources: Freshbooks / EveryDollar / Mint
2 | Book 1-2 retainer clients before going full-time
Having a couple of retainer clients will keep you afloat when other projects fall through. I worked with a great web design company designing websites and an iPad grocery store app when I first started. If your full-time job didn't make you sign a non-compete, you'll be able to overlap gigs until going on your own. Make sure whatever projects you're doing on the side isn't something unethical during this transition time. It's bad practice and disrespectful to your full-time employees to be moonlighting within the same industry they are in. You don't have to take away business from others to find your own.
These large projects kept me booked 20 hours/week. It was the stability I needed to step out on my own and seek brand and handlettering clients for the other 20 hours/week. This stability kept me confident in myself when I had to kill a project for a new business in town due to scheduling and contract issues. A lesson in boundaries for sure but one that would've hurt me financially and creatively if I didn't have other work to get me through that hard lesson.
Client-related resources: Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines / My Networking Tips / How To Rock Your First Interview
3 | Part-time job for stability and creative breaks
Seems odd to suggest you work more to take breaks, doesn't it? I'm not saying this is the BEST WAY but it's the way that worked for me. I maintained financial stability while building my portfolio by having a retainer client and taking a part-time job.
Reduce the chances of burning out creatively by taking a part-time job unrelated to design.
I worked in a greenhouse because I've always loved plants, gardening, and nature. Tending to plants was therapeutic and made me focus on something other than design. You have to step away to refill your tanks. I did for 20 hours/week deadheading plants, watering trees, and hauling 50lb. bags of corn to customers’ vehicles. BONUS: My arms got really toned.
Resources for taking creative breaks: The Greenhouse / Meditation
This is a good time to debunk another freelance myth: you'll only work 40 hours/week.
WRONG, especially when getting started. From the 3 tips, you may have noticed:
+ 20 hrs./week after 5 pm with my own clients (and more when I went full-time freelance)
+ 20 hrs./week on brand and handlettering work for my portfolio
+ 20 hrs./week at a part-time job for financial stability and creative breaks
—
60 hrs. total/week
Chances are if you've read this far you're a motivated and disciplined self-starter so this probably isn't surprising to you. What you trade-in for the freedom you make up for in hours worked. It's why loving what you do is basically a freelance requirement. The hardest part for me was BELIEVING I could work this way as a freelance designer and knowing I DESERVE to work how I work best. Once you face your own demons of what's keeping you from starting, then you can truly begin.
I hope sharing more behind the scenes about my experience can help you delve into why and how you can begin a side gig or full-time freelancing as a designer. Comment below: What questions do you have? Or a reflection we can build upon? Let me know!

December Cold Moon
Life lately in tune with the monthly full moon cycle.
November Frost Moon – December Cold Moon
Hello! The December Cold Moon is the 5th post in Full Moon Monthly, a series on Brave Girl that recaps life lately and what's on the horizon. The Cold Moon is also known as the Long Nights Moon because it's close to the Winter Solstice, the day with the least amount of daylight (source). This month's moon is unique because it's the only Supermoon of 2017! Meaning you'll notice it's brighter and bigger because it's closer to the Earth than the other moons have been this year. Since the Frost Moon last month, there's been a lot of travel and visiting with friends and family.

Anthropologie Holiday Fashion Show
I'm laughing because I'm nervous as shit, and excited, to be a model at the Anthropologie Holiday Fashion Show this month. Gah! Part of me knows I'll enjoy it (thanks to friends like Ashley and Kristin telling me I actually can!). The other part of me needs to start walking in heels every day. ALL DAY. leading up to the event.

Christmas Cookie Decorating
I'm really excited to spend some time with my mother-in-law and family decorating cookies this month. For some reason, I've never gone in the last 8 years being with Joel. I think it'll be a Saturday well spent. I love all the festive, traditional things this time of year and I'm excited to add one to my list!
Florida for Christmas
Probably why I'm trying to squeeze in all the festive things like decorating cookies, Hallmark Christmas movies, egg nog, and everything else because we'll be in Florida this Christmas! It's the first time I've ever been in warm weather for Christmas. I'm hesitating to tell you guys because so far the few people I've told have shot cold, Michigan daggers at me for fleeing to the warmth. Just call us some good ole SNOWBIRDS this year!

This pretty much sums up how we rang in the New Year last year at a good friend's wedding. No clue what we'll do this year but wanting it to be more chill. What're your NYE plans?!

Design Quarterly: Fall 2017 New Design Work
Fall 2017 New Design Work
Gah! How is it already going to be December this week?! Thought I'd share some recent of my design work before the snow flies (again). It includes handlettering more 8x10 prints, dream clients, and my work popping up in unexpected places. Scroll through to see my Fall 2017 new design work:
Joon+Co Seasonal Prints
You've heard me talk about Joon+Co. quite a bit (here and here) if you've been reading BG for a while. Joon + Co is an online ethical fashion shop for the conscious fashionista and part of my Fall 2017 new design work. I created a few hand lettered prints for their Fall and Holiday collections. The cheeky and sweet quotes that owner Becky came up with were so fun to letter.
Extra sweet: Your print purchase will be donated to the Bay Area Women's Center in my hometown of Bay City, MI as part of the Artists Giving Back series!

The Lipstick Lens Brand Design
Can you really go wrong with gold foil and Millennial pink vibes?! Of course, the answer is NO. Especially when it's for The Lipstick Lens, a new girl boss photography brand in Grand Rapids. Colette, TLL founder, and photographer offers empowering photo sessions for fempreneurs and women needing a brand refresh (headshots for your website and profile photos, anyone?!) Her mom's life motto was definitely my inspiration while creating the logo and graphic elements. Keep an eye out for her website coming soon!

No Man Left Behind apparel at Seattle Starbucks Roastery
The No Man Left Behind illustration I created for Has Heart was part of the Starbucks x Has Heart pop-up shop in Seattle this September–November. I've been not-so-patiently waiting to tell you guys and shared more about it here. I couldn't have guessed how far this design would travel when I first illustrated John's Vietnam story 3 years ago. Seattle is probably the furthest my physical work has reached so far and it's all thanks to the Has Heart team who is spreading an even deeper message about our nation's veterans. Read their mission.
Shut Down Line 5 Print Donation
I donated a handlettered Lake print to my friend’s effort to raise money to Shut Down Line 5. Line 5 is an old pipeline spanning the bottom of Lake Michigan west of the Mackinac Bridge into Canada. It’s owned by a Canadian oil company that has a bad rap in oil spills and who delivers 23 million gallons of oil EVERY DAY through these old pipelines. There’s serious concern an oil spill can happen the issue isn’t acknowledged properly. As a Michigander who relies on & loves our Lakes, you can bet I’m doing what I can!

Coming soon in Winter ‘18
I'm really excited for upcoming work in the new year; more handlettered prints for a Grand Rapids-based shop, event materials and brand theme for a national event, and a little sumthin' sumthin' for my very first freelance client who's been with me since 2014 (hint: it involves Artprize 2018!)
I'll also be continuing personal work for Full Moon Monthly and new Creative Business Chats for more behind the scenes. Be sure to join in if you're interested in freelancing!
Joon+Co Style: Buffalo Check and Balance
Joon+Co Style: Buffalo check pants and moon-inspired necklace
It's no surprise I'm a big lover of the Moon and symbolic meanings. I put this Joon+Co outfit together as winter Capsule Wardrobe inspiration for the very same reason. The buffalo check high waist pants and mini crescent lune necklace have a lot of meaning in this season of my life.
Are you familiar with yin and yang? It's the Tao philosophy's symbol for wholeness and balance. It's a circle made up of equal parts black and white. It symbolizes the balance of dark and light within our spirits and is necessary to live. Think the crest of the wave and the trough of it or how the day slowly turns into night. You cannot have one without the other.
Until now, a yin yang choker necklace was the closest I'd been to this philosophy of balance (90's babe...tell me you had one?!).
We're taught to fear the dark shadow sides of life and only focus on the bright and positive. Sometimes bright and positive are used as an avoidance tactic to Truth. Acknowledging yin in a healthy way can be healing. It can open you up to feel the brightness of yang in a deeper way.
A balance of both yin and yang is required.
It's the reason I love these buffalo check pants. Equal parts dark and light. Areas of muted tones overlap to create a peaceful compromise between threads of black and white.
Isn't the moon, too, an example of this balance?
The way she waxes and wanes to keep emotions flowing in a way that is therapeutic instead of toxic. It's why my luna-loving heart enjoys this mini crescent lune necklace. A dainty detail reminding me of the importance of each phase when the clouds roll in. May we do our best to respect the waxing and waning of light in our life, as painful and beautiful as that can be.
Winter capsule wardrobe inspiration
I want my wardrobe to support me as this season of slowness and cooler temps rolls in. The winter season is notorious for playing tricks on our minds. Telling us the light may never return and we'll be in this darkness forever.
So, a love note. To you and to me.
Let's pull this letter back out in February, yes?: Let us face the darkness with perseverance and patience, holding tight in faith that the light will come 'round soon. On the darkest of days when we don't believe this to be true, let us be reminded of the truth of yin and yang – dark needs light, and this is how it's always been. Stay warm. xo, Em
